An entanglement

Set of three: Polymer gravure and relief polymer

I found some fishing line trapped between two enormous rocks in the old quay. What kind of forces could even make that possible? I visited it most weeks for months – watching as it wrapped itself into new contortions, the lines kinked with the memory of storm and tide batterings, then as it gradually thinned and lightened in colour. After about a year I could pull it away from between the rocks and I took it home in my pocket. Tidal currents (and the Gore) means that not so much plastic washes up at Bucks Mills as it does elsewhere along the north Devon coast. But 90-95% of the rubbish that I collect from the beach comes from fishing.
